Black Dog's Knife by Carlene Farmer

BlackDog's Knife by Carlene Farmer

The black obsidian blade of this unique knife was knapped by Mark Condron.  The blade is 5.25" long and 2" wide at the widest.  I used black resin and imitation sinew to haft the blade to a heavy beaver chewed willow stick that I picked up as driftwood.  I wrapped the handle with a piece of brain tanned deerskin which I decorated with eight brass conical tacks.

Using delica beads in red, black, yellow, white, blue and gold, I tell the story of Black Dog's near disastrous beginnings to his rise as a wise and powerful warrior and leader.  The knife's wrist strap consists of eleven old yellow with red, white and blue striped cane beads, ten African sand cast beads, 20 old blue glass spacers and two old hammered copper beads strung on a piece of deerskin.  Total length of the knife without the wrist strap is 14".

The sheath was made of brain tanned deerskin.  The lower half of the sheath was doubled and the top part was edged with old red white-heart trade beads.  The fringe of the sheath was wet rolled and then tipped with ten tin cones.  An old, black eye trade bead sits on the front of the sheath.  Eye beads were believed to ward off evil spirits of one's enemies.  This bead is chipped on the back side from many years of use, but this helps the bead to lie "flat" on the leather and continue to provide protection to its owners.

This warrior's knife uses a spike elk antler for the handle to which was hafted a long, sharply pointed mahogany obsidian blade.  Part of the antler was wrapped with brain tanned deerskin which trails in rolled fringe around the handle.  The peyote bead work tells Elk Runner's life story which I will leave to the new owner's imagination.  The blade of this knife is about 7" long and the overall length of the knife is 21".  The brain tanned moose sheath has a yellow and orange pony bead edging.

Buffalo Hunter's Knife

Buffalo Hunter's Knife

The winged bloodstone blade of this knife is another of Craig Ratzat's.  I hafted it to a piece of diamond willow with rawhide, sinew and hide glue.  The brain tanned deerskin wrapped portion of the handle is peyote beaded with Buffalo Hunter's story.  This simple brain tanned sheath has a stone buffalo fetish sewn near the top.
